Audition Information and Submission Criteria

The following items need to be completed for audition purposes.

  1. Auditionees must submit all appropriate information found in the 2024-2025 A Cappella Groups Audition Interest Form.
    • Forms can be requested from Mr. Von Glahn by email.
    • Forms can also be found on any of our choir Google Classrooms grades 8-12.  
    • After submitting the interest form, auditionees will be invited to the A Cappella Groups Auditions Google Classroom.  
    • Interest form requests are usually processed once a day.
  2. Auditionees must accept the invitation to the A Cappella Groups Auditions 2023-2024 Google Classroom
    • Reminders, updates and notices to auditionees will be sent through the above mentioned Google Classroom with the class stream, by private message, by email or any combination of the aforementioned methods.
  3. Auditionees must fill out the 2024-2025 A Cappella Groups Audition Form
    • Forms can be found on the 2024-2025 A Cappella Groups Audition webpage and the A Cappella Groups Auditions 2024-2025 Google Classroom.
  4. Auditionees must sing a Voice Range Check.
    • Pre-recorded mp3s have been provided to use.  
    • Auditionees should perform these exercises singing with director playing piano assisting
    • Auditionees are being evaluated on their voice range only.  
    • Falsetto should not be used in these exercises.  
    • Auditionees will eventually have difficulty as they approach their highest and lowest notes, but are encouraged to continue until the difficulties prove them unable to do so.  Those difficulties are a necessary part of eachvocal range check.
  5. Auditionees must sing three scales - a low diatonic scale, high diatonic scale and a chromatic scale - specific to the voice part for which they are auditioning.
    • Pre-recorded practice tracks have been provided for practice purposes ONLY.
    • Auditionees will be evaluated on their performance with relation to the following categories:  Intonation and Tone Quality.
    • Singers will be given starting pitches and sing all scales a cappella.
  6. Auditionees must complete a solo performance by live audition (unless otherwise specified) on June 4, 2024 at the group audition.
    • The solo selected by the auditionee must be school appropriate in content and language and of a style of a  contemporary popular song.  
    • The solo must be sung with a karaoke/instrumental backing track that does NOT include the melody line being sung by ANYONE other than the auditionee.  The accompaniment track link or the file must be posted/uploaded to the Google Classroom assignment listed in the SoundXplosion 2024-2025 Google Classroom no later than Monday, June 3rd at 6:00pm.
    • Auditionees will be evaluated on their performance with relation to the following categories:  Intonation, Rhythmic Accuracy, Tone Quality, Dynamics, Diction and Visual Energy/Stage Presence.
  7. Auditionees must demonstrate their beatboxing skill by live audition (unless otherwise specified) on June 4, 2024 at the group audition.
    • Auditionees should improvise on performing a beatboxing pattern or improvisational solo of eight measures or more.
    • Auditionees should demonstrate, and will be evaluated on, their best vocal percussion sounds.
    • Auditionees should demonstrate, and will be evaluated on, keeping a steady vocal percussion pattern relative to steady tempo.
  8. Auditionees must complete a performance of their voice part in the group octavo/song required by live audition (unless otherwise specified) on June 4, 2024 at the group audition
    • Auditionees should sing their voice part ONLY.  
    • Any solo parts found in the octavo should NOT be sung by the auditionees.
    • A pdf file of the sheet music will be provided and linked both in Google Classroom and on the audition webpage.
    • Pre-recorded practice tracks have been provided for practice purposes ONLY.
    • Auditionees will be evaluated on their performance with relation to the following categories:  Intonation and Tone Quality, Dynamics, Diction and Visual Energy/Stage Presence..
  9. Auditionees must participate in an interview with the director(s) present, at a time to be determined/scheduled before Monday, June 3, 2024 @ 6:00pm.
    • The interview should occur in person, unless otherwise specified.
    • Only one auditionee will be admitted  at a time.
    • The interview will be recorded.

Results will be sent via email ONLY to each auditionee on or before Wednesday, July 3, 2024.  Updates or changes to the time/date of the release of results will be given by the A Cappella Groups Auditions 2024-2025 Google Classroom class stream.

Questions may be emailed to jvonglahn@cresskillnj.net   We will attempt to answer questions in a timely manner.  However, to keep the audition process equitable for all, there may be some questions or requests that we may not be able to adequately answer, due to timing or content.
